Blog Post 3
I do not think of myself as a writer and I do not like to write. However I am able to express my my ideas through writing and occasionally using pictures to support my ideas. I did not do any recreational writing as a child. The only recreational writing i do now is through text and social media. I do prefer to have an actual conversation with some one if i have more than something quick to say. In school i wouldn't say that there were any writing assignments i enjoyed. All of the writing assignments i remember doing just seemed like pointless busy work.  I did have one assignment that left a lasting impact on me. I remember taking a computer programming class and one of our assignment was to give direction to your house in programming language.  This helped me learn and remember the process of the language. I will use writing assignments in Engineering to help students learn and remember processes and try and stay away essays that are busy work.

  1. What a creative writing prompt. I really liked how your computer programming teacher asked you to design a text that really forced you to learn about the subject through your writing.

I agree with you that just talking about something can help students "process" it more deeply, but sometimes writing can take your understanding to a whole new level (at least, that's been the case for me). So I hope that, as a teacher, you will be able to give those assignments that really make students think more deeply about what it is that you want them to learn. I agree that much of school writing (e.g., answering short-answer questions) does not lead to this deeper processing or understanding.

    Thanks for your posting!

  2. I agree that often times writing assignments in school seem so much like busy work. However, as people start to get into classes and careers that they are actually interested in, I am starting to see why the writing is so important. Writing to me is simply communication, and the more a person is able to write then the better off they will be at communicating. Writing to me becomes annoying when teachers get so picky about the commas or spelling and they simply overlook the quality critical thinking.
